Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace exists to help businesses tap into ALL of the power of EVERY employee, regardless of who they are or where they come from. Glass ceilings are being shattered in every industry by once quiet groups of people, but while EVERYBODY is getting opportunities these days, is EVERYBODY'S voice being heard? On episode 3 of Everyday Greatness, we will be talking to the Diversity & Inclusion Lead for Music & Creative Development at the ABC, Karla Ranby, and Principal Consultant of Diversity & Inclusion at Symmetra (SUH-MET-TRA), about what value they have seen from employees whose voices previously haven't been heard. Season 6: Episode 2 - Part 1 - Cleaning the dirty racism water in Australia
Thursday Sep 07, 2023
Thursday Sep 07, 2023
Water sometimes gets dirty if it has been raining for a long time, so to clean the water you need to filter it for an equally long period of time – Sometimes it feels like it is harder to clean it that it was to make it dirty… And the same goes with racism in Australia – What has been a murky, grubby water supply for a long time has had a lot of good people try and filter out the gunk, and today – while there are still dirty patches, some people say the water is getting clean enough to drink. On episode 2 of Everyday Greatness, we will talk to some of those good people who have been trying to filter the water - Australia medallist and co-founder of Yalari – Walter Stanley AM - who acknowledges that his successes in life were shaped by the education he received as a kid, so in 2005, along with his wife Liew, he founded Yalari - which offers similar opportunities for Indigenous children from regional and remote communities. We will also talk to former Sydney Swans captain Brett Kirk, who - when his former teammate – Adam Goodes – started getting booed by AFL crowds largely just because he is aboriginal, used his platform as a professional sports person to try and stamp out racism. We will also talk to Lowanna Grant – the daughter of Stan Grant. Lowanna has witnessed firsthand some of the dangerous work done by people like her father to try and make Australia as fair for indigenous Australians as it is for those of European heritage, and we will see if she thinks the racism water in Australia is clear enough to drink yet. The fight for equality for LGBTQIA+ people has always been proud, but not always smooth. A lot of brave people have done a lot of brave work which has made today's world a safer, more comfortable place for young LGBTQIA+ folks. On episode 1 of Everyday Greatness, we will talk to the Founder and Chair of ABC pride and former President of Dykes on Bikes – Manda Hatter & ABC news producer Cameron Nicholls - Cameron was reluctant to come on the show as he said his life as a young gay man was "pretty smooth" and didn't think he had much of a story to tell. But the fact that a young gay man's life today is "pretty smooth" is a story worth telling.

Ken Marslew is not a "victim" – he has always had options. When Ken's son Michael was gunned down during a robbery at Pizza Hut in 1994, he used that tragedy to try and make the world a better place – He started an antiviolence movement called "Enough is Enough", he has been criticised for trying to help criminals rehabilitate (including offering his sons killer a job), but he's just a real human being trying to offer people a chance to realise that we all have options, so we shouldn't be too quick to call ourselves "victims."
